Layout Description
The three-rail O-gauge model railroad at HobbyTown in Kennesaw, Ga was built by members of
the North Atlanta O-Gauge Railroad Club. Construction began in 2008, and installation began in
2009. The railroad is 97% complete. The layout is still the NAOGRC’s “club layout”, though
they have not held operating sessions here in some time. It is located in the front of the
HobbyTown store in Kennesaw, Georgia. It is a huge attraction for families.
The railroad consists of four separate routes; there used to be a “mining” track, too, but that
has been out of service for a very long time. The scenery represents mountainous terrain with
several bridges and tunnels, a river and a swamp.
During store hours, three of the four routes can be operated by customers pushing a button to
make the trains go around their routes one time. Each is powered by a Lionel CW-80
transformer. After hours, the railroad is powered by two Z-4000 transformers, with operations
controlled by MTH WTIU and Lionel Legacy. During the Pilgrimage Open House, trains will be
run in “after-hours” mode.
There is also a 4x8 HO-scale layout that was built as the 2012 Piedmont Division Raffle Layout
and a 4x3 N-scale demonstration pike in the Model Railroad department in the rear of the
store.
