Tour Atlanta’s Great Model Railroads

November is National Model Railroad Month. The Piedmont Division of the National Model Railroad Association (NMRA) celebrates November with a public tour of model railroads in the Atlanta Area.

Tribute To Bob McIntyre

As a tribute to Bob McIntyre we are dedicating the 2014 Piedmont Pilgrimage in his honor.  He founded the Piedmont Pilgrimage in 2003 and continued as Chairman until 2013.  During that time the number of layouts on tour increased from 12 to more than 80.  Over 6400 visitors toured the layouts last year.  Bob contributed to model railroading as an office holder and cheerleader.  His out-going personality encouraged individuals to become model railroaders and to expand their skills.

Open House Layouts

The Piedmont Pilgrimage tour is open to anyone interested in model railroading. Just come in anytime during the scheduled times for each open house. The cost for entry is free! Children are welcome to attend with proper supervision from their parents. Bring your camera so that you can take home some great memories. We would love for you to join us as we celebrate National Model Railroad Month in November by visiting Atlanta's best layouts! Be sure to tell your friends.

Spreading the Word

The goal of the NMRA is to promote the fantastic hobby of model railroading, and the best way to learn about the hobby is to see for yourself the wonderful work of the Atlanta area experts. We are fortunate here in Georgia to have an incredibly large collection of outstanding model builders and all of them are very friendly and glad to invite you in to look at their work.

More Information

A printed tour booklet for the Pilgrimage is available at your local hobby shop, or you can find the tour schedule and directions online here at the Piedmont Pilgrimage website.

Look for our yellow Piedmont Pilgrimage yard signs to help you find the location of the layout.

Wheelchair Accessibility

Since this tour is comprised of home layouts, very few of the layouts on the Piedmont Pilgrimage are wheelchair accessible. Most of the layouts that say "Yes" to wheelchair accessibility will have a qualifier and do not meet federal guidelines. Since most of the layouts have a basement entrance, access is by traversing across a sloping and grassy or pine straw terrain. This should be approached with assistance due to the need for going up or down a hill and extra care should be taken during or following rain. The door entrances are a minimum of 30". Another area of concern is the line of sight once in the train area. The general height of the layouts range from 44" to 55" from a sitting position it may be difficult to view the layouts. None of the home layouts have wheelchair bathrooms available. We have a few layouts housed in public buildings that are fully wheelchair compliant.
